An eagerly awaited mix, this, from a disciple of drum & bass who has more recently let house music into his life. Photek delivers here, no question about that – and though the momentum flags a bit in the central part of the mix, where it seems he isn’t sure exactly which tempo to head for, the rest of it displays an innate knowledge of what will make people dance. What really helps with the mixing here is Photek’s conscious decision to stick with as tough a kick drum sound as possible, which means that the tempo variations are a lot easier to cope with. Some of his own inclusions, ‘Azymuth’ at the start, ‘No Agenda’ in the middle and the Boddika remix of ‘101’ towards the end, help preserve the identity of a compilation that stands sure footedly among the best in recent DJ Kicks. Another powerful weapon to their arsenal.
