Various Artists – Fabriclive 74: Pangaea – Fabric

Pangaea is the lesser known point of the Hessle Audio triangle that includes Pearson Sound and Ben UFO, two artists who have already contributed to Fabric’s monolithic compilation series. So here he is with his own contribution, and it’s a mix that picks up in pace and intensity from his own dubby opening track ‘Recreational Slumming’ to the no-nonsense highs of Imaginary Softwoods’ ‘Crystal Pond’. Not afraid to get his hands dirty, Pangaea is soon motoring along with the doom-laden drums of Reeko’s ‘Momentum’ and Mystica Tribe’s ‘Temple’, before cutting to a funkier outlook with The Sun God’s ‘Maum’ and the shimmering haze of Stenny & Andrea’s ‘SEA (The Time Gate)’. There are 27 tracks here but while the tempo is quick it doesn’t feel like a rush. The biggest rushes come with the crunchy bass of Pearson Sound’s ‘Starburst’, which cuts to the thrilling Kobosil track ‘Osmium’, and probably the mix’s defining moment – a love it or hate it one – as Speedy J’s ‘Something For Your Mind’ interweaves with Bleaching Agent’s ‘37ml’. Power and pace in abundance here!
