Soul Jazz continue to neatly sidestep the genre tags, preferring just to concentrate on good, funky music here rather than be confined to a particular style. When the music is as fresh and vital as it is on ‘Riddim Box’ then you’re on to a good thing. Established funkateers such as Sunship, MJ Cole and Zed Bias rub shoulders with newer kids on the block Koda9, Tubby T and even an inclusion of the Radio Slave remix of Stereotyp’s ‘Blaze ‘n’ Cook’. All are thrown into a melting pot that contains athletic bass lines, jumped up beats and a real sense of energy throughout. Soul Jazz have delivered once again, with a compilation that complements this year’s ‘Future Bass’ perfectly.
