Various Artists – Y-3 Ten Year Anniversary Compilation – Y-3

A huge range of music on Y-3’s anniversary comp, made in conjunction with Adidas, believe it or not! There is something for everyone here, so much so that the variety becomes a bit bewildering at times. But the big names – Larry Heard, Maurice Fulton, Joaquin Joe Claussell – tend to pull it out the hat more often than not. Frank Wiedemann’s ‘Moorthon’ is an intricate construction, with what sounds like organ pipes used at the higher end, while the raspy sax and firm house beat of Claussell’s ‘Storm’ are very good. Maurice Fulton’s ‘Asteroids Playing Ping Pong’ has a chunky beat, and yes – there is real ping pong action at the end – while Blackjoy’s ‘Soubise’ is a much darker, brooding slice of techno. To completely throw the cat amongst the pigeons, Daniel Wang & Jules Etienne offer what seems to be a cha-cha-cha derived track, ‘Rondo para Tercera Luna de Ypsilon’. So if a tour of different dance styles floats your boat, this will give you just what you’re looking for!
