Andy Turner (aka Aim) sneaked this one out right at the start of the year, and it’s well worth hunting down if you have an interest in UK hip hop, as it’s a showcase of the label past and future. Naturally the man himself figures, with the assured broken rhythms of ‘Corliss Avenue North’, while the other label staples all make favourable impressions. Gripper’s ‘El Ruedo’ lends some funk to proceedings, while his ‘Styrofoam Head’ has a more earthy groove, while the flavoursome hip hop stew is complemented by the odd softer track such as Paperboy’s ‘Bigfoot’. With nods to disco and house as well as hip hop, and a touch of light comedy here and there, this is a stimulating tour of one of north west England’s musical beauty spots.
