Modern electronic has come a long way since dubbed-out triphop, now venturing into fields closer to avant garde or musique concrete. Germany’s Kompakt organisation has to be commended for not just distributing the best minimal techno outings but also pushing music relating to talented individuals with a vision, like this Canadian artist who first made a huge impression with 2007’s Standing On A Hummingbird set.

The sounds which Mark makes with treated guitars, drums, field recordings, effects and his mercilessly-enhanced vocal excursions is out on its own. ‘At Your Feet’ recalls the great John Fahey in his avant garde phase jamming with the Velvet Underground on top of a mountain but the general mood is sublimely-intricate chillout with a dense, restless edge. Tracks like ‘Oak’ and ‘Their Light Reflected’ are gorgeous beds of alien resonance and shadowy melodies for the morning after the cosmic disco. Totally recommended for anyone looking for a new kind of chillout album or something totally different and strictly personal.
