This is the best compilation Renaissance have released for some time, and given the residency they’ve just taken up at Cable, their year is off to a cracking start. Both these discs are deceptively simple in their execution, but it’s the second that lingers longer in the memory, working from spacey, almost trancey beginnings of Boratto and Christian Smith through to full blown, bass driven material. This comes in the form of Martin Buttrich, who turns in an excellent remix of Josh Wink’s ‘Dolphin Smack’, while Stimming’s take on D-Dub’s ‘Deep Blue’ is also well worth seeking out. CD1 is cool, calculated house music but never loses its impetus, running through Jon Tejada’s mix of Boratto’s ‘Take My Breath Away’, Gabriel Ananda, Mathew Jonson and the fine new Bomb The Bass collaboration ‘The Infinites’. The selection of Boratto productions and remixes only adds to the appeal, with ‘Trills’ the standout, but in truth there is barely a dud across two excellent mixes of house music.
