Sven’s annual summation of the euphoria and glory of the year’s Cocoon season has transcended summing up what was big at his wildly-successful Ibiza club nights that year to become a definitive representation of the prime electronic tackle to emerge during the previous 12 months. Sven is a unique figure among DJs in that, ever since he guzzled whole crates of beer while performing marathon sets at London clubs which barely managed to contain their roofs, brain-cells or trousers, he has injected that this element of soul and – quite an achievement for electronic music – a feeling that he cares deeply about every note or beat he drops. This is the proverbial game of two halves: CD1’s ‘Disco’ is the full-on techno experience, spearheaded by Mathew Johnso, Ahmet Sisman, Timo Maas, Dubfire and even Virtualmismo’s ‘Mismoplastico’, which still makes my y-fronts tremble and sprout horns when I think what it did at establishments like the Drum Club in the early 90s. CD2’s Invaders goes deeper to tweak a few nonchalant badgers’ stiffies with gossamer gloves of spritiual multi-textures, names like Anthony Collins, Sven Tasnadi, Pigo, SIS, Quenum and the mighty Prins Thomas achieving their goal of musical subtlety and floor-seducing sensuality with deadly effect, heightened by the touch of this immortally great DJ.
