This is a cracking start to a new !K7 series that looks to capture the magic of a mix tape. It’s not a nostalgia trip, more a succession of tracks squeezed on to disc as if made for a C90 – DJ Kicks for the tape deck, if you will. The mixing complements this, as it’s a bit rough round the edges but in a way that totally suits the music The Rapture have chosen. They’re creative with their material too, as in Armand Van Helden’s ‘Flowerz’, a real treat when the full bass line drops, or the euphoric piano that’s given a spotlight on Richie Havens’ ‘Going Back To My Roots’. An enjoyably broad selection concentrates on the New York underground but also adds Thomas Bangalter, Cajmere, Alter Ego and Kid Creme to the mix. In truth there’s never a dull moment as the party rolls on.
