Steve and DaveConnor hang on to the established electro groove by the skin of their knackers, instead prefering to plumb new areas of sonic exploration. It sounds genuinely new and establishes moods ranging from the sinisterly cinematic to creepy-crawly. ‘Anno Domini’ is grungy, acidic and psychotic with its slashed boxyvatriationon the ‘Planet Rock’ beat. ‘Astro Glide’ comes on like a slo-mo dub crawl through a deserted city at dawn with lashings of sci-fi fx and bottomless sub. ‘Step Retracing’ is a jittery, night-stalking epic, peppered with electronic squeals, grunts and the sound of robotic animals masturbating furiously over a muted breed of future funk. Like hopping through a radioactive jungle. ‘The closing title track is a langorous, off-the-wall cruise through the sonic swamp. Frighteningly out there and upfront.
