EMPEROR MACHINE
VERTICAL TONES & HORIZONTAL NOISE PART 1 & 2
DC RECORDINGS

There’s something truly fascinating in knowing that the brain behind wacky art-dance experiment Emperor Machine is none other than Andrew Meecham, the northern producer who first shot to fame with classic rave act Bizarre Inc. As with his Chicken Lips productions (with long time partner in crime Dean Meredith), his solo output as E.M. has attracted only but devoted fans. After ‘Aimee Tallulah Is Hypnotised’, the album, two 12”s turn up at once. The first contains ‘Yes No Egg’, a loose funky jam on a seventies hippy tip (123 BPM); on the flip Idjut Boys dub out ‘Front Man’ in a cloud of skunk that would make Jah Wobble proud (122). On vinyl two, ‘Tropical Waste’ (122) nods at kraut impro-rockers Can by fusing electronics and rock in a psychedelic (ecstatic?) gesture; this could be Add N To (X) on top dancefloor form. ‘Roller Daddy’ is more live vibey funk with a rock touch, verging on seventies progressive (think Gomma’s protégés Whomadewho without the grit, 115).
