Lightships create a spark at the top spot

Lightships1 (4) LIGHTSHIPS – SWEETNESS IN HER SPARK – GEOGRAPHIC

Debut release from Teenage Fanclub’s Gerard Love and his new outfit. A nostalgic spangling sunshine strummer on a warm breeze. The LP Electric Cables is due in April.

2 (1) DE LA SOUL’S PLUG 1 & PLUG 2 PRESENT FIRST SERVE – MUST B THE MUSIC – PIAS

Upbeat hip hop that sounds fresh with an old skool feel and plenty of bounce to the ounce. Comes with 8 across the board remixes.

3 (6) SUPER BEST FRIENDS CLUB – YES YOU ARE / EVOLUTION – HAKISAC

An intricate and carefully orchestrated ramshackle debut full of loveliness, from this ecstatic London sextet. Just go with it.

4 (8) KRAAK & SMAAK – KRAAK BEATS VOL 2 – JALAPENO

Three tasty cuts to get your Saturday night teeth into. Runnin’ gets us under starters orders with a fine slice of 21st century disco. This Feeling takes the house route picking up some peaking elements along the way, and BPLB puts classic disco vocals over todays house stylings.

5 (5) LETTHEMUSICPLAY – SPACE / WAVES – LETTHEMUSICPLAY

The rolling, deep, lush and majestic Waves is a towering adrenalin rush, armed with Alex Gopher’s Euro disco mix, RAC’s glistening feel good number and Akiri Kiteshi’s panic stricken caught in a rip. Meanwhile The 2 Bears and Jacques Renault boost Space with added thrust.

6 (9) FEATURECAST – GET LOVELY FT. GREG BLACKMAN – JALAPENO

It certainly is lovely, oozing soul with a cheeky nod, wink & soft shoe shuffle, can’t wait to play it on a sunny day. From the Around The Block EP.

7 (27) KRIS MENACE – EFEEL – COMPUPHONIC

Big room Euro disco that has got 70’s holiday hit goes Balearic written all over it.

8 (12) TOMAT – 01-06 JUNE – MONOTREME

Debut LP of out there sonic landscapes made up from 1 synth, 1 guitar and layers & layers of voices, creating an ethereal, almost biblical experience of miracle proportions. Amazing!

9 (10) THE HACKER – SHOCKWAVE – DIFFERENT

Late 80’s early 90’s European rave complete with those oh so familiar chants of Ecstasy Ecstasy. Gesaffelstein and Mark Archer turn up the pressure. It’ll make you sweat.

10 (15) STEPHEN MALKMUS & THE JICKS – STICK FIGURES IN LOVE – DOMINO

Another feel good summer strummer produced by Beck and lifted from the critically acclaimed LP Mirror Traffic.

11 (13) ANDY LEWIS & WESLEY DOYLE – THE BEST OF DAYS / BARNEY’S THEME – ACID JAZZ

Go straight for Barney’s Theme on the flip, a bubble gum dancer that’s a bit Young Holt Trio meets The Archies, bringing 70’s right on cartoons to mind.

12 (17) SID LEROCK – TEMPTRESS & THE TAMER EP – MY FAVOURITE ROBOT

Sheldon Thompson marks MFR’s 50th release with a deep warm hypnotic number that contains a distant but up close and personal vocal, which is slightly disturbing and very effective.

13 (NEW) CHARLOTTE GAINSBOURG – ANNA / REMIXES – BECAUSE MUSIC

A gorgeous song from the much lauded LP Stage Whisper gets a nip & tuck. Tom Furse of The Horrors fame builds a haunting swirling in the mist masterpiece. Clock Opera deliver a cute pop nugget and Micky Moonlight Matters goes down the 80’s disco route.

14 (23) VELOCIRAPTOR – IN THE SPRINGTIME – TOO PURE SINGLES CLUB

Australian 12 piece cooking up some exciting snarling dirty basement garage rock with a pop twist. Makes you want to check out one of their gigs.

15 (NEW) ETIENNE DE CRECY – AM I WRONG 2012 – PIXADELIC

The French maestro is set to release a 1992 – 2012 anthology box set titled My Contribution To Global Warming, hence this single. The Shoes come up trumps with their Slo-Mo Remix, a brooding bass heavy dubtastic knee trembler with lashings of atmospherics. SCNTST, Felix Cartal and Shinichi Osawa also get involved.

16 (NEW) CHRIS COCO – HOLIDAY REMIXES – MELODICA

The song that launched Melodica has been re-worked and is set to blow up over the summer. Sare Havlick delivers a couple of disco and Italo beauties. While the man with the plan Chris Coco flexes his opium den deep house credentials, and Deekie wind it up with their own holistic retreat answer version. Lovely stuff.

17 (19) THE AFEX – SHE’S GOT THE TIME – ACID JAZZ

Originally released in the mid 60’s, then much sought after in the 80’s. Another fitting gem in the Rare Mod EP series.

18 (7) SWEET LIGHTS – ENDLESS TOWN – HIGHLINE

Shai Halperin returns with a new project and a bittersweet feel good strummer about his home town Philadelphia.

19 (14) YPPAH – FILM BURN – NINJA TUNE

Featuring the smokey vocals of Anomie Belle and riding some nice musical 21st century trip hop.

20 (11) CHAMBOCHE – METACOMA EP – BLACK KEY

Lead track Mello is a deep percussive builder with lush pads & hooky repetitive synth riffs. Show It shifts up a gear sporting B-Boy swagger and an infectious acid line, and Perpetual Motion is perfect for that still at it sunrise buzz.

21 (21) TOOB – CHOP HOUSE VOL 1 – TOOB.ORG.UK

The lead cut Wave 4 is a deep and mystic brew that stirs the spirits. Nueva Onda dabbles in voodoo electronics and the title track is all about the delirious celebration after the sacrifice.

22 (25) MADCOLOURS – VERDA HUGO – TOO PURE SINGLES CLUB

Art school trio debut with urgent ramshackle jitteriness and fucked up African licks

23 (24) VOSPER – RELEASE EP - MEANT

Nice slab of bumping techno from Canada via Paris with a bit of a Danny Tenaglia meets Chicago’s Relief vibe.

24 (NEW) MEN OF NORTH COUNTRY – MIRROR MAN / THE NORTH –

ACID JAZZ

Head straight for The North on the flip, a stomping slab of 60’s influenced quality pop that’s pretty much guaranteed to put a spring in your step.

25 (NEW) CLAP RULES – GOLDEN REMIXES – BEARFUNK

Four cuts from last year’s Golden Hands LP get a rebirth. Emperor Machine peaks with Silver Mountains, a cosmic disco builder with futurist flashes and off kilter vocals. In Flagranti twists Oh Uibe, dropping a great sample into the breakdown, and Mock & Toof get deep down & dirty with Fantasmi.

26 (NEW) THE CAST OF CHEERS – ANIMALS – SCHOOL BOY ERROR

A nice jolly up with jagged bits, sweet African guitar licks and rousing choruses.

27 (30) TIM NICE – FLY BY – TALL HOUSE UNDERGROUND

Locked in heads down groover with an early 90’s Balearic network feel.

28 (29) LEE WAXMAN – HOT JUPITERS EP – ELECTRIC SHEEP

Track 2 Rogue Planet has got a lovely deep groove going on, and track 3 Ganymede cooks up a warm feeling of contentment. Nice.

29 (NEW) TRAILER TRASH TRACEYS – LOS ANGERED – DOUBLE SIX

London quartet oozing a warm and druggy sound. Comes backed with the spangled dreamer You Wish You Were Red.

30 (NEW) THE FILTHY SIX – GIRLFRIEND – ACID JAZZ

This is an interesting one, Michael Jackson’s Girlfriend meets Archie Bell & The Drells’ Tighten Up.
