HNQO – The Old Door LP (DOC Records)

Brazilian HNQO is one of the leading lights in the South American scene. The producer has released on the likes of Hot Creations as well as running his own esteemed Playperview label. He evolves with each new release and that is born out once more here on his full length album on the top DOC label. It finds him mixing up old and new ideas with real skill. It is an album that is atmospheric and story telling from the off, with great textures and vibes pervading the grooves at all times. Featuring guests along the way and produced over the course of a year, this is an epic effort. The title track opens things up with loose, lively grooves that are fat and organic. Spooky and haunting chords make it a creepy tune and from there the likes of Death of The Elephant get a little more clean and crisp with lively synth lines layered over the kicks. Each track is well detailed and perfectly arranged. Far more than just some flat and plastic loose, they feel well developed and really take you somewhere. Egyptian Lover feat Cotry for example is a number with glassy chords and warm bass winds, while Bowed Pianos is a jumbled jam laced with great keys, walking bass and strings. There are darker, more club focussed moments like Fallen Angel, too, as well as dreamy interludes like Light A Cigarette. Closer Poem feat Rai Knight is a synthetic minimal pumper the sends up home with a spring in our step and a new appreciation for HNQO.
