Not only do NY label Whatever We Want know how to create demand, they also know a darned fine tune when they hear it. House Of House is Saheer Umar (Super Family) and Olivier Spencer (Still Going, DFA) and they want to bring some drama back to the clubs. Not that camp 90’s handbag drama, but real, soul-stirring, tuneful drama that evokes memories of classic New Jersey house and New York disco. That’s a big command for a debut release, and whilst it doesn’t quite tick all the boxes it claims to, it stands tall amongst the current surge in quality underground house music. “Rushing To Paradise” is a lovely, almost subdued track in its first half, gentle piano sweeps gradually building the emotion to an almost gospel-ish middle pay-off, the kind of track that once it hooks you there’s absolutely no escaping it. Yes, there’s the distant chimes of Italo house in there, so it might not be everyone’s cuppa, but for the converted this could be one of the tunes of 2009. Amazing stuff.
