Claptone – The Only Thing / In The Dark – (Exploited)
DMC World Magazine
The man with the golden beak and the golden production skills returns to Exploited with ‘The Only Thing’ – the next instalment from his upcoming album ‘Charmer’. ‘The Only thing’ is an 80s electronica inspired reverie – reminiscent of The Cure, The Psychedelic Furs and yet has a soulful, funky edge that tears up the floorboards like a wood hungry tornado. I welcome the return to a depth charged bass line, the likes of which made the new deep house so delicious at the outset, then the vocals and harmonies and pianos dance around each other like ayuhuasca filled spirits around the crackling embers of a forest fire. It kicks. And then some. As for ‘In The Dark’ it’s a beat driven, soaring synthscape that writhes and slithers around an fx-ed vocal like an egyptian pot full of vipers around a stray mouse and will send VJs and CO2 canons into overdrive. So that’s one more notch on the superstar heavyweight belt for Claptone and one more hit incoming for your laptop / usb stick.
