Donald Byrd
Love Has Come Around (Combo Short Re-Edit)
CDR

Despite its original 111bpm tempo being retained and being an almost three-decade-old recording, this sublime Paradise Garage anthem still sounds as vibrant and essential as it first did in 1981. Taken from the jazz trumpeter’s ‘Love Byrd’ opus, ‘Love Has Come Around’ was actually written by Isaac Hayes and was a much loved jazz-funk jam with the UK’s blue-eyed soul boys of the day, aided and abetted by the scene’s meteoric rise from the hinterlands of the Thames estuary and Essex’s white, working class soul and jazz-funk aficionados, through to warehouse parties, pirate radio and rare grooves. A cascade of treasured memories come flooding back when listening to this subtle update by the Swedish producer best known for his work with Heya Hifi as S.U.M.O.; my own upbringing taking in Soul Weekenders, warehouse parties, and stints as a pirate radio broadcaster. A fitting and highly respectful update in the best tradition of Todd Terje et al.
