ACID/OUT OF MY FACE
AZULI BLACK

How can you have an acid revival when the 303 hasn’t stopped bubbling since it first burped its distinctive tones back in the mid-80s? Some like to trumpet the fact that they’re using it – like Azuli’s on-a-roll Jeremy Sylvester with his new tune called ’Acid’. But rather than just recreate he takes it on to blinding effect, spewing up a nagging, burbling excursion which uses the old Chicago tactic of fixing up a strong 303 riff and subjecting it to all kinds of sonic abuse. Builds and swells into a dense forest of squelching and squealing with the bonus of a delicious momentum in the groove. The flip’s ’Out Of My Face’ features Smiley Jay expressing his desire to reach such a condition over a harder, tribal-tinged romp, still with acid in its loins. Lovely jubbly, as Phuture used to say.
