Say what you like about the NY label Whatever We Want and their policies for creating market demand (it obviously works), the important thing is they still know a darned fine tune when they hear it. House Of House is Saheer Umar (Super Family) and Olivier Spencer (Still Going, DFA) and they want to bring some drama back to the clubs. Not that camp 90’s handbag drama, but real, soul-stirring, tuneful drama that evokes memories of classic New Jersey house and New York disco. That’s a big command for a debut release, and whilst it may not tick all the boxes it claims to, it sure does stand tall amongst the current resurgence in quality house music. A subdued tempo allows lavish sweeping piano to build up an engaging track (Italo house anyone?) before the impassioned vocals drops in, drops out, creating a fantastically blissful dancefloor moment. Granted, not an instant winner for everyone, but this will definitely prove to be one of the tunes of the year. Unique, and hugely recommended!
