Zagreb-based Ilija is hurling them out at the moment on his Red Music label and each one’s a corker. ‘Calypso’ is a mid-tempo percussive shimmer-groove laced with bongos and slap bass, coming in original and Extended versions. ‘Call me Tonight’ was originally released in January and now returns with new mixes. Greg Wilson became an Ilija fan after hearing his music on MySpace and has already remixed and worked with him. Here he turns in one of his inimitable old school-flavoured boogie epics with seismic results, episodically blending ‘Breaking Bells’ cowbells, Makossa brass and vocal-piano nirvana, with seismic results. The Rhythm Lovers take the percussive funk route with testicular undertow, while The Revenge is sweet, with slinky piano and sparkling midway illumination of the gopher’s turnips.
