Deep house is a term that gets bandied about all too frivolously these days so it makes a change when a release takes me diving into the deep blue with its kaleidoscope of colours and sounds.Johannes Brecht’s ‘Trois Nocturnes’ is a feast of late night music that soothes the soul, makes the spirit soar and makes everything around it resonate with positive vibrations. ‘Nuages’ is soft and billowing, inviting you to settle, lifting you above, moving on through the gentle percussive rhythms and then it’s gone. ‘Sirènes’ darts in and out of the waves its now you see them, now you don’t curious noises and effects communicate a story of almost criminal beauty, seducing the innocent then brutally transforming them from one state to another. There’s tension and melancholy here too and beware the end is playful, our spirits leap as the strings enchant and charm us, leading us forwards but to who knows where when led by Sirènes? ‘Fêtes’ is an arpeggiated dance barefoot in the sunshine, all bright smiles, rimshot and finger clicking percussion and a bassline pulse that keeps the blood running as high as the passion. And to close? ‘Nuages’ slow version is a stripped down, soft but solid kick, claves and triangle driven arrangement that acts like a conch to the ear – you can almost hear the waves lapping on the sand in the moonlight as you beach comb for souvenirs – starfish, seaweed, shells and that absolutely perfect white stone. Perfect for headphones, hammocks, homes and hot summer nights.
