Nicuri – Orbital Chords – (Growin Music)

New Jersey DJ/producer Nicuri is a man who boasts quite a history when it comes to electronic music. The sort of producer who arguably hasn’t received the kudos his body of work deserves, he nonetheless uses his debut for the Growin Music EP to remind us of his production prowess. Multilayered and engrossing from the first beat to the last, there’s more than enough going on here to force parallels with the likes of fellow eastsiders Joey Anderson, Levon Vincent, DJ Qu et al.

The EP in question is called Orbital Chords, and it’s a stunning tale in deceivingly simple house music. The first track, ‘Holding the Four Wall’s is a case in point. Crafted on a vehement analogue tip, it’s as deep and dexterous a joint as I’ve copped in some time. Almost celestial in parts, it works as a brilliant foil against the second half of the track’s harder agenda. ‘Digital Crush’ is a far less introspective proposition, with the vibes this times around centered on more full-on textures. ‘Walks on the Boulevard’ sees us out amongst a cacophony of classy strings and elongated synths, and if this doesn’t whet the appetite for what’s ahead with this label, then I don’t know what will.
