Pleasure State – Ghost In The System EP – (Hot Creations)

Every so often I receive a tune that makes me laugh hysterically like some deranged, pleasure seeking music junkie: no surprises then that the ‘Ghost In The System’ EP made me do just that. My pupils dilated like I’d just seen the love of my life when I realised that Pleasure State is the official name for the collaboration between MK, Lee Foss and Annabel Englund. They nearly popped out of my head once I heard ‘Subject Matter’s slightly distorted electrical buzz in the bassbin. The massive Talking Headsy / B52’s-y/ american indie garage vocal twist just adds to the jacking house cocktail. Unsurprisingly the bassline will remind you in places of MK’s classic ‘Burning’ but then that memory slips out of reach like an egg yolk in a prairie oyster when the rap and Annabel’s dulcet tones distract you. Carl Craig’s slow-mo, brooding and statically charged ‘Electricity’ provides the mineshaft to the underground, whilst the title track ‘Ghost In The System’ is like aurally seeing some one run past you, just out of your eyeline then realising that you’re alone in the house. All three tracks are good in their own right and it’s hard to choose a favourite. But if I must … Nah. The walls are talking … they say, Hot Creations is on fire.
