Rennie Foster / JGarrett – Soda Cracker / Waterworks – (RF / Subspec Music)

If you know anything about Rennie Foster, then you’ll be all too aware of his tendencies for unlikely sounds. Well, on his latest release he introduces us to an equally unusual release, as he tackles two tracks each alongside a longtime sparring partner of his, JGarrett. Together, the EP delves deep for a series of solid club tracks that are definitely worthy of the re-release (of sorts) that they’ve been granted here. The bumper-packed four-track release gets underway thanks to the gorgeous and sprightly sounds that comprise Foster’s ‘Soda Cracker’. His sole original on this outing, it features some really uplifting strings and a bittersweet vibe that’s enhanced by the enticing male vocal. The other track with Foster’s name stamped on it is Amir Alexander’s take on the brilliant ‘Call the Sun’. As ever with Alexander, this is a classy affair, with his liking for a heads-down, foot stomping groove a pertinent feature. On the flip, JGarrett’s contribution gets underway thanks to the baseline heavy track that is Waterworks. Another groover that’s been tailor made for the heads, this is the sort of battle weapon that’ll really put the cat amongst the pigeons. A masterpiece in how to create a hypnotic track out of but a few canny elements and loops, it definitely showcases the producer in a good light. Third wave man Sean Deason then crops up with a remix of JGarret’s ‘Fuel Core Recovery’ that calls the listener to the dancefloor in no uncertain terms courtesy of its many jazzy overtones. Wonderful stuff – all round.
