Donnie Calvin’s vocal reworking of Eddie Grant’s reggae hit from the early ’80s first gave producer Arthur Baker mass acceptance and went some way to restore his credibility in the wake of New Edition’s sugar-coated ‘Candy Girl’. A top five pop hit back in 1982 ‘Walking On Sunshine’ has never been far from the charts or dancefloor sampled by a plethora of producers in the past including Norman ‘Pizzaman’ Cook. Kudos to New Jersey’s Gossip label (the home of Hott 22 and Live Element) for licensing the classic and giving it a subtle makeover which adheres close to the original arrangement whilst adding a chunkier house kick and harder edged synth lines. One for nostalgia junkies and new kids on the block discovering this for the first time.
