Shur-I-Kan really pushes the boat out with the title cut ‘Special Powers’, as it gets off on a big room bumping rhythm, flying in twisted vocal samples, before breaking into a druggy disco feel, where it’s not just the mirror ball that’s spinning, there’s layers of riffs & pads all swirling like an electric storm, then it breaks down into an out of body experience, and just when you’re hovering above the dancfloor, the beats kick back in again & you’re back in the eye of the storm. The Latin Workout Mix does exactly what it says on the tin, adding some nice Mongo Santamaria touches & a chilled jazz funk feel. Finally we see Milton Jackson stepping into the frame, for a darker re-work of ‘I Want It’, for those that like a no nonsense heads down mindless boogie.
