Silky Sunday
Friend
Rebirth

At last the anthem of the summer and a tune whose impact will last a lot longer, possibly joining landmarks like ‘Unfinished Sympathy’ as one of the timeless classics. There’s certainly a similar feeling of melancholy desolation in singer Snoux’s emotional reflection on a breakup and veteran German producer Roy Stroebel’s gorgeous production which also relies heavily on beautiful symphonic sweeps and makes its point early by dropping to a heart-melting ballad stretch where the tear-jerking ‘Everybody needs a friend sometimes’ hook appears before the euphoric groove takes it to heaven. Sandy Rivera was smitten early and turns in a lovely remix focussing on the vocals along with a guitar-ruippling Reprise while Tomas Hedberg boosts the melody with Kyoto-type sounds. The Ripperton & Alex Attias mix might strip the pads and main vocal but is causing a stir in its own right as a spaced, whispery dub. All around the world dancefloors will be crying, hugging and simply howling in disbelief when this beauty is dropped. Tunes like this don’t come along very often. You have been warned.
