Every year around this time someone comes up with a novelty, celebrity laden (albeit by selfies cobbled together from their instagram pages), tongue-in-cheek yet trading hard on the thing it laughs at, record and video that blows up outro-exponentially. The Chainsmokers ‘Selfie’ is just that – with a clean mix for radio play. It’s not rocket science, nor is it a timeless classic but it’s a global hit in the making that works a wry, sometimes bitchy, girlie (of course) OC sounding, bathroom stall monologue over an oompah oompah electro beat before dropping the catchphrase ‘let me take a selfie’. Love it or hate it (I’m claiming the fifth here) this is set to join the ranks of ‘Thrift Shop’, ‘Gagnam Style’, ‘Party Rock Anthem’, ‘Duck Sauce’ and ‘Let The Bass Kick’ in the played out, played to death, won’t die until haters burn all existing copies in the streets or more likely until another similar, quirky, flavour of the year record takes its place riding the wave of the zeitgeist.
