Vaults – Midnight River – (Virgin EMI)

Vaults have that London Grammar attitude with a Florence Welch soul. They write dark, brooding melodies with a headphone heart and a dancefloor sensibility. The remixes see this open ended sketch and fill in the colours. Theo Kottis’ palette is thick with rich oil paints. Memtrix puts a fish eye on the vocal then grafitti bombs it with white and technicolour drum and bass spatters. It’s like an aural holi festival. Pomo trips then smooths it out with a soulful electronic rewiring that lets the vocal swing in a hammock and kickback shoeless and sunkissed. The Vaults remix cranks up the future disco meter with an upbeat, uptempo mix worthy of regular daytime radio rotation. Good package.
