JUAN ATKINS & MORITZ VON OSWALD PRESENT BORDERLAND – TRANSPORT – TRESOR

A second outing for this heavyweight collaboration, and perhaps not surprisingly given the title it works brilliantly on public transport – preferably the tube. That’s because this is a darkly shaded piece of work, the pair opting for flinty textures that contain some sharp synth work but are still capable of panning out to broader textures. The drum tracks are consistently good, as are the bass sounds – and this underpins the music on ‘Transport’ with a really satisfying, deep and dark edge. The collision of Detroit and Berlin is easy to spot, and makes sense – as this release marks the 25th anniversary of the Tresor club. As both producers understand the significance of that, and the music that was there at the beginning, ‘Transport’ manages the brilliant juggling act of taking you back to the start – but keeping you in the present as well. In doing so it becomes an essential album to celebrate the achievement.
