Hockey are a brand new four piece outfit from Portland, Oregon, and their debut release is causing must have reactions such as, “What the fuck was that? Who are they”. Hockey’s original and Shoes mix of “Too Fake” are both bundles of energy with attitude, Ben Grubin’s vocals come over like the bastard son of James Murphy and Julian Casablancas, riding powerful driving rhythms that get you locked in, and bursting into big glam rock punch the air and stomp your feet choruses which have got anthem written all over them. If you can imagine LCD Soundsystem getting it together with The Strokes and having the time of their lives over a few bottles of Bourbon, then you’re heading in the right direction. Meanwhile London’s Joe and Will Ask? Take Hockey down the more traditional pumping acid house route, which is nice. There’s definitely a buzz about Hockey and “Too Fake” is a slap in the face sit up and take notice debut.
