Lifted off Stephen Malkmus’ third post-Pavement album, ‘Kindling For The Master’ gets tweaked by some of the names currently most favoured by A&Rs in the UK. Sounding more and more like a proper band Andy Meecham’s Emperor Machine project delivers a funked-up rework that’s perfect for building fresh moods early on in the night. For once Hot Chip’s promises match the delivery, their wonky remix truly bringing an intimate edge to Malkmus’ attention-grabbing vocals. Faithful to his reputation Major Swellings (Prins Thomas) opts for that slow-ish soundtracky/jazz-funk sound that he and pal Lindstrom are now well known for.
