The upcoming Same As it Never Was album from West London funkmasters Ollie Teeba and Jake Wherry is a widescreen, multi-faceted masterwork of moods and lush production. As a trailer comes this single – probably the two immediately accessible tracks with catchy hooks, the complex brass arrangements which characterise the whole album and the distinctive vocals of new discovery Jessica Darling. ‘Clap Your Hands’ is racey and soulful in a brisk, revue-style way. ‘You’re Not All That’ takes a slower, funkier approach with their customary hiphop and jazz flavours. Many try to do the blending of retro and current styles and sound thin and contrived but this sounds totally natural and, if there’s any justice, should be huge.
