Brighton’s Cookshop label expand its repertoire with this debut from the unusually monikered Zoon Van Snook. It’s almost like the heady days of when electronica was something worth get excited about (Manitoba, Boards Of Canada, etc), although musically, it’s certainly not nostalgic – just really really good. ‘Bibliophone’ is a gentle swathe of melodies and half heard voices, almost like a 70’s library tune re-spliced with some digital oomph. ‘That Just About Does It’ has a country-acid vibe under shuffling breaks and a Charles Manson monologue. Texan Diego Chavez reworks ‘The Gloaming’ into a shimmery glitch fest with slo-mo disco stylings. Then ‘Troublesome Trucks’ round things off with a lovely, soporific downbeat number that floats on a bed of ambience. Gorgeously left of centre vibes – if you like having your feet and brain softly massaged simultaneously, this EP’s for you.
