Lovebirds feat. Declan McDermott ‘Mar-A-Lago EP’ (TEARDROP)

It’s always nice when Sebastian Döring delivers some new material. In fact I’ve been following him since he was part of Hamburg duo Knee Deep who took the Soulful House world by storm around 2000 with releases on Defected, Soulfuric and of course their won Knee Deep Recordings imprint. For some years Döring calls himself Lovebirds as a solo artist and has developed his own Teardrop label to a well established imprint within the House Music planet. For his new EP the man teams up with Australian born Berlin resident Declan McDermott who is a multi instrumentalist in the making. Those skills can be heard on this EP, entitled ‘Mar-A-Lago’ on two sublime cuts.

Title track, ‘Mar-A-Lago Sunset Theme’ is a lovely mid to late 70s inspired up-tempo soul banger with a superb, funky bassline, a catchy rhythm guitar hook, and a slick Fender Rhodes lick whilst ‘Great Ocean Road’ (my personal pick) is characterized by acoustic guitar strumming, rhodes, bass, and beautiful synth work. This is all followed by a breakdown mid-song that transforms the track into a whole new beast.  All in all this is classy trademark Lovebirds music which takes us somewhere between Key Largo and Key West feeling a light spring breeze, that we all aim for after the long winter. Great!
