Whoops, another one which slipped through the Update re-organisation period, but it deserves a major mention. This is a brave outing for one of the world’s top DJs, based around this quartet of mates’ live gigs and sessions over six months. Laurent’s done the Retrospective, now it’s time to move on. Basically, with keyboards and brass to the fore, the giant step is an mebracing of cool jazz, the emotional, soul-soaring variety, heard to atmospheric effect on slower tracks like ’63’ and ‘Butterfly’ before ‘M Bass’ comes on more like Weather Report, after a squalling freeform intro. Those lamenting a kick drum will breathe a sigh of relief with the techno of ‘Controlling The House’ but, for me, it’s brilliant to be reminded of the Art Ensemble Of Chicago by a well-known roof-raiser.
