Jakwob – Somebody New – (Digital Sound Boy)

Jakwob’s ‘Somebody New’ sets you adrift on rolling piano chords and a staccato bassline then sets this all alight with Tiffani Juno’s smoldering vocal. Belgian duo GoldFFinch deliver a shimmering, gurgling reworking that makes you follow the flow, skinny dipping and diving in upstream to swim into a refreshing tributary to then be baptised further downstream in a vast and peaceful expanse of lake. TCTS hotwire it all, entering their dragon with an arrangement that simultaneously breathes fire and life into the track (it’s my favourite favourite). If that isn’t enough for you, there are two drum and bass remixes on offer: the Jakwob VIP remix keeps the mellow piano chords, reduces the vocal to a whisper and revs the throbbing engine for a wildside ride. Then the Shy FX remix is a superb vintage that puts me in mind of the heady days of Bukem and Grooverider on Radio 1, AWOL at the Ministry, Metalheadz at the Blue Note, Speed at the Mars Bar and Full Cycle at Bar Rumba. A fresh and truly excellent package.
