MOTION GRAPHICS – MOTION GRAPHICS – DOMINO

Domino have proved themselves rather adept at spotting lone producers who make good electronic music. Motion Graphics – the New York-based artist Joe Williams – has crafted his self-titled album over two years in various US locations, and if you listen to it on headphones you’ll be able to appreciate the attractive sonic details. After the charming, offbeat ‘Lense’ there are deeper, R&B style grooves for Houzzfunction’ and ‘Anyware’, creating a tension between the slow beats and the busy textures of the latter in particular. ‘Vistabrick’ has a few sparkling textures, there is some curious playing around with the sound perspective on headphones especially, as in ‘Mezzotint Gliss’ – while ‘SoftBank Arcade (Swiftcode Version)’ reveals a surprising array of percussion. A subtly rewarding debut.
