Based in Berlin, Hiorthoy makes all of his music with hip-hop’s favourite old school toy, an MPC sampler, which explains the raw dynamics of his style, but not how he manages to keep it all together so well. “This Record…” lashes punch-drunk drums with cool saxophone riff and intermittent piano – the only other element being bass – and it gives it a live jamming-in-the-studio feel, but with structure. And, should you think that title isn’t a mouthful enough, “The Shy Boys With Windbreakers & Thick Glasses Will Come & Take Revenge” pushes it further with similar themes, shifting towards acidic riffs circa Adamski ‘NRG’ era rave. Quirky, sure, yet also funkier than all this probably reads – check it out.
