SECOND WOMAN – S/W – SPECTRUM SPOOLS

After a successful debut last year, Josh Eustis and Turk Dietrich have wasted no time in kicking on to the second part of their Second Woman collaboration. As with the first, titles and identity are in relatively short supply, but that doesn’t stop the music making a strong impact. There are moments of deep heaviness, where a concrete rhythm supports shimmering digital textures, but there are moments of austere beauty too, such as when the bruising beats of ‘///\\\’, complemented with what sounds like an industrial harp, are replaced by the long, padded out ‘////\\\\’. There is still a great deal of tension throughout though, as the musical thoughts fidget impatiently, only rarely coming into focus. When they pan out into bigger sonic spaces the benefit of headphones can really be felt. Once again this is a stimulating body of work from a collaboration that looks set for many more interesting electronic adventures ahead.
