Stevie R – Penelope EP (Parallel Records) (20/04)

London based artist Stevie R is next up on the Parallel Label and after great Eps on labels like Cr2 and Motek, here he shows off his silky skills once more with two new cuts that get backed up by a remix from the Monkey Brothers.

Opener Penelope is a deep and tender house roller with ghostly synths and lazily undulating beats that really suck you in. Warm and cosy, sombre and seductive, it is a perfectly emotive cut that boasts great synth work with real feeling. Monkey Brothers then step up to remix and do so with a sympathetic air, layering in some more upright drums and grittier bas but keeping the track thoroughly deep and seductive. Afolabi is then a more direct tune with groovy drums and splashes of cymbal, squelchy synths and a textured chord vamp encouraging you to get on your toes and cut loose. A subtle dub mix pulls things back and makes the track into a nice roller perfect for basement clubs or early doors sets. This then is a fine EP from a fine producer.
