James Hammer
This Is Not Scary
Mixtape

Oh yes it is! Where the gerbil’s scrotum? The original brings back memories of what was called minimal techno in the 90s when small voles protested loudly at being stuck in the toilet bowl or tossed off by Paul Daniels. Minneapolis techno warrior James Hammer [Relief, Bangers & Nash, Random Access] follows his great debut, which included the immortally-jacking ‘Bang It’, with another winner. Apart from the afore-mentioned animal action, the drums jack fiercely, notably some toupee-removing hihats. Mixtape honcho Gus Brown’s mix goes deeper and darker, throwing up a barrage of riffs which can only cause severe damage. Then the mighty Orlando Voorn detonates the sauce bottle with haunting melody shards over clanging groove. I’m glad this label exists [and just realised I reviewed their next release by C-System last week – it’s the summer holidays and my marbles are shot!].
