My trousers! Singed to a crisp! Been a while since I’ve encountered a record which threw subtlety and laptop cleverness out of the window and got back to techno’s raw, churning essence. Since debuting on the legendary Relief with ‘I Need’, the man has gained fans including Dave Clarke and Carl Cox, DJs who can spot that often-absent spirit more than anyone. ‘MPLS Finest’ sets out the EP’s stall with a charging turbo-rush groove whose percussion-dominated locomotive beat recalls Stay Up Forever’s Guy The Geezer. ‘Take Control’ is classic 90s-style jacking Chicago with snatches of vocal stoking excitement. ‘Bang ‘Em’ is the incendiary standout, a frenetic stomper with killer drum programming and intestine-freezing voice of doom making for old skool heaven. ‘Internal Warfare’ finishes it off with a looped-up brain-twister which builds into a wall of juddering chaos. This is like a breath of fresh air, a megablast of bison flatulence just on 12-inch. Just what the doctor ordered.
