MATHIAS KADEN
PENTATON EP
VAKANT

Berlin’s Vakant continues its immortal run as it hits number seven with dangerous new kid Mathias Kaden’s follow-up to last year’s amazing ‘Circle Pit’ EP. The accompanying blurb calls his sound ‘broken beep’, which is a fair description of the title track’s wayward, sparking shuffle through the creaking electronic jungle. The beat keeps tripping over before catching the swing again on board the bass, while creepy noises, farts and squeaks fly past. In the distance, a free jazz saxophone occasionally shrieks. Somehow it all works. We are informed that ‘Train’ has ‘enough sub-bass to make your pants full’. Quite. And a bloke playing the spoons. ‘Spank’ croaks out another other-wordly space-shuffle whose sense of time and motion is simply out there. The real ghost in the machines, but brilliantly original.
