John Keys is actually two people – Dandy Jack [aka Martin Shopf] and Andres Garcia from the firing Chilean techno scene. Their debut EP is a robust excursion into their joint vision of putting a modern techno twist on classical elements of traditional South American dance rhythms. ‘Torturing Lines’ is 12 minutes of organically unfolding minimalism with clanking percussion, hall of mirror riffing, wheeling noises and funky boogie clavinet riff driving things along. ‘Rumba Triste’ has already appeared on the recent superlative mix CD from Jamie Jones, boasting a harder, racey Detroit feel, while ‘A Caballo Por Manhattanena’ ropes in Spanish elements with steel guitars and acoustic instruments. Exotic and forward-thinking.
