I’ve been waiting for someone to do this in techno. Leave it to the Black Dog to take the electronic dance music blueprint, rip it up and charge off into unknown, even avant garde, territories. The Orb have being doing it for years but this return of the Dog after the recent reissues is a stunning tour-de-force, apparently inspired by a week of heavy Prozac abuse and emotional warfare. It starts in typically alien future-funk fashion though stripped of gorgeous melodies and warmth, then gradually unravels into freeform electronic graveyard creakings to ultimately disturbing effect. Remix-wise, Surgeon adds his own weighty machine grind dimension while the Bass Soldier Rework takes it further into space limbo madness. Brave and on its own, but then they always were.
