Torrfisk – The Remnant (Apollo Music Group)

Apollo Music Group come on strong nice more here with a new EP from Torrfisk. Also known as Scrubfish, this artist comes direct from the heart of hose music that is Chicago and as such serves up some block rocking, razor sharp beats with real menace.

The artist is fresh off the remix tip on Derrick Carter’s “Squaredancing In A Roundhouse” and this is his first Ep here but is sure makes an impact. The Ep flies out of the blocks with Flash,a tough and loopy jam with a raw ‘work that’ vocal layered over pinging drums. Jack Freak is next up and is just as direct, with freaky vocal sounds and slamming drums all cut up with razor edged hi hats that demand you dance. Once again on PTSB, the kick drums really stick out as vast, rubbery things that you cannot ignore. More sharp percussion and clever little stabs all add heat to the fire and mean its another banger. A dub mix is provided without the vocals for even more direction action then last of all, a more swinging tune with a little more funk and playfulness in its bones comes as Hodges Junction re-works Flash into seven minutes of slinky fun. Overall then this is a killer EP.
