Kicking off 2012 with a fresh bag of sounds, the next in the Knee Deep Remixed singles series is the sexy dancefloor smash 'All Nite' which gets a full on maker-over from top UK DJ/ Producer Aaron Ross. Armed with delicious beats and a sublime dramatic basslines, Aaron chops the vocal and adds in some surprises of his own turing out 2 distinctively different quirky dancefloor bombs, one of which is rather haunting! Also on the package Edi Carlucci, 1 half of the Brothers, turns out a hot funky 8...

A whole raft of influences come together on Young Magic's debut album. The band, now settled in Brooklyn, have travelled a lot both geographically and musically, and it shows in music that is never backwards in coming forward. Big textures and beats support dreamy vocals - but there are some unusual diversions, such as the close alignment to UK garage in 'Drawing Down The Moon'. At other times the music is suspended in a kind of floaty, psychedelic mood, the drums becoming massive in the likes o...
Anyone keeping an eye on the career of Speech Debelle will know that she had a surprisingly tough time of it despite winning the Mercury Music Prize in 2009. Yet what 'The Power Of Speech' gives her is exactly that, an album that finds her coming back stronger and more determined than ever, without ever getting close to a sell out. Fighting back through music and words, Speech gives us upfront ('Studio Backpack Rap'), breezy ('I'm With It'), quiet determination ('Blaze Up A Fire', a duet that fu...
From the left or the right side? Straight ahead or upside down? These are the questions being asked by Sonar Kollektiv as we try to work out just who is responsible for this album. It's Jazzanova for sure – but through the eyes of others, who take their tunes as a start point for a really strong remix compilation. Henrik Schwarz is especially effective in his take on 'Let Me Show Ya', while the strong house quotient is reinforced by Ame ('Glow And Glare') and Motor City Drum Ensemble ('Look What...
Trance Nation is a label that the Ministry have used to brand their compilations for a good 15 years or so now, but they deserve a lot of credit for finding ways of keeping the style as relevant and up to date as it ever has been. Cosmic Gate deliver a storming pair of mixes here, not necessarily big on the riffs but including some excellent and meaningful vocal tracks to go with the driving rhythms. Nic Chagall & Duderstadt and Cosmic Gate themselves characterise the lean sound of the...
This is Luciano's party mix album, complementing his successful Ibiza season of the same name, and it keeps the principles that have made his 'Sci.Fi.Hi.Fi' and Fabric mixes such collectors' items. Yet 'Vagabundos' is a lot less subtle in the way it goes about its business, getting in to the groove straight away and never letting up. The way he blends a number of different tracks together in pursuit of basic, primal dancing has never failed to amaze, but here the focus is much more slanted towar...

Few of DFA's acts have divided opinion as much as Prinzhorn Dance School, and their second album 'Clay Class' is unlikely to change that opinion. It does however build on what they've already achieved, which is a good vocal chemistry between Tobin Prinz and Suzi Horn, and introduces some strong lyrical couplets. Sometimes, though, the feeling is a bit half pat, as if the duo are purposely not putting the effort in – which is of course a big part of their musical style, which sometimes takes The ...

Scope is the Belfast-based Ric McClelland, and 'Seven Reasons' is a good deep house album that refuses to conform to type. At its finest it proves a good blend of panoramic deep house production and fine song writing, and two of the three tracks featuring Terry Grant – 'Follow Me', and 'Seven Reasons' – bear this out. Meanwhile 'Won't Be Long' is a bright combination of 80s influenced slow breaks and chunky keyboards, while 'Rain (Interlude)' teases the listener with no kick before leading into ...

Bonobo's stock is very high at the moment, with 'Black Sands', arguably his best album to date, scoring highly in many a 'best of 2011' list. Here it gets the remix treatment, which if anything stresses just what a good album it was in the first place. Perhaps inevitably it's the likes of Mark Pritchard that make the biggest impression, but his remix of 'Stay The Same' might surprise for its lightness of touch. However others work a treat too, whether it's Banks in a darkly brooding mix of 'The ...

On this evidence, the Spaniard John Talabot is one hugely talented producer. His reputation has been steadily building through 12-inch releases on Hivern Dis and Young Turks, but this is his first album, and he rises to the occasion with an enchanting piece of work. The key to Talabot's success is the warmth he gets from spacey keyboard textures and fairly slow, disco-influenced beats – but if this all sounds familiar it gets a treatment that makes it somehow sound totally unique. This would app...

Prins Thomas's Internasjonal label is easing itself in rather nicely, and this debut album from Cage & Aviary adds another string to its bow. The duo of Jamie Paton and Nigel of Bermondsey have been around for five years, but this is their first long player. In general terms they make slowed down, largely instrumental disco – the sort of thing you'd expect from Thomas himself, but with more of an '80s influence. 'Giorgio Carpenter' is a perfect example, bearing something of a resemblance to ...

A celebration of 20 years for the 430 West label, this collection of Octave One re-rubs brings together a formidable list of techno and electro talent. It's a versatile collection, moving from deep and thoughtful musings to powerful, up front club tracks, with the odd one dropping in between. The duo offer some remixes themselves, and 'Meridian' comes out with a tough kick drum, but elsewhere it's left to the likes of Luke Slater, Ken Ishii, Alter Ego and Cari Lekebusch to deliver a very impress...

A very comfortable marriage, this, between two musicians with considerable pedigree in the shoegaze side of things who have been meeting up for a while, and who have now decided to commit their endeavours to disc. With Schnauss, an established producer in his own right, and Peters, one of the Engineers who are also a highly respected band, a lot of emphasis is placed on the sounds themselves. As with previous outings they take in the customary influences from My Bloody Valentine, 808 State and e...
