“We grew up with music. Bewteen Dave and myself we play around 10 instruments and a lot of them like Double Bass, Piano and Sax really lend themselves to jazz. So instead of learning classical music as kids, jazz was a far more interesting option and at least you got to jam a bit with your mates in the school band playing ‘Rock Around The Clock’ and ‘In The Mood’ or whatever. It was also a great scam to meet girls. Still is actually! Music really is like food. We can’t think of anything worse than only listening to one type of music, that’s like only eating only peanut butter sandwiches as Ray Charles once said. Jazz is something that you need to grow into, it’s sort of like wine or olives. When you’re a kid you just don’t get it and as your taste develops you start to realize how there are so many layers there are to music.”
“He had a ruler with a drawing pin through it which he used to hit you with if you made a mistake. He also used to draw on my arm with a pen which was pretty disconcerting for a six year old…”
“Miles David, Joshua Redman, Soweto Kinch, Brad Mehldau, Oscar Peterson, the list is endless.”
And today…who are your big electronic influences?
“Originally St Germain and Kruder & Dorfmeister, these days Trentemoller, Booka Shade, Parov Stellar, Postal Service, LCD Soundsystem, Black Coffee…it’s all over really.”
“Joshua Redman live at the Village Vanguard in New York without a doubt. I actually shed a tear or two. We also caught a tribute to James Moody where Bill Cosby was the MC. That was pretty rad as well. There was old Bill in a New York Nicks hoodie taking the audience and band apart. That was pretty hilarious…”
“Leaving his brand new mobile phone on the roof of his car and driving off, lost keys, girlfriends, flip flops, occasionally the beat but never the tune.”
“We weren’t really beach bums, we were more background jazz musicians studying music at uni…playing hotel lobbies, weddings, barmtzvahs…as well as being professional beachbums! Nothing like playing lobby jazz, sunburnt and with sand in your hair. That obviously didn’t last though and we were super into the hybrid of Jazz and Electronica. It was like the clash of organic and electric that really excited us. The rest is history.”
“Glastonbury is any band’s dream. Since then we’ve played some amazing festivals around the world. We headlined the Vrij Festival in Amsterdam earlier this year in the Olympic Stadium which was definitely a highlight of our career so far.”
“Green Valley in Brazil is AMAZING. Ask any DJ or Act who has played there. An open air club in the middle of a jungle valley, crazy set up and massive crowds. Unbelievable.”
“We have always loved animation as kids and now even more as grown up kids. Animation allows for so much more than a band standing in a field wearing white and lip syncing to their track. BORING.”
“Norman (Fatboy) has always been cool. He’s just a great bloke really. Dave and him just ended up talking about fishing. The Faithless guys are always super people as well and whenever we play together it’s great to catch up and share some Ibiza gossip.”
“Meeting Nelson Mandela was amazing. We’ll never forget him saying “Ah! Goldfish!” as we met him just before playing at his 46664 concert. Wish we’d sampled it. Just kidding. Actually, we’ll sample anything!”
“It’s jazzy house, with some African influences obviously.”
“We even made a music video about the snobby-ness of Jazz purists. Check out our ‘We Come Together’ music vid on youtube. We were never making music for those people anyway.”
“Roxette. Ha. Good teenage memories.”
“The electronic scene in SA is exploding at the moment. There are so many amazing producers and acts coming out at the moment and there is also an amazing psytrance and outdoor party scene. It’s pretty rad partying outdoors in South Africa, we’ve got such amazing weather and nature.”
“Dave thinks he knows everything.”
“And so does Dom. Haha.”
“Our singer Sakhile would like to work with any of the Pacha Ibiza Bar ladies…maybe next year he’ll get lucky. We’ve been coming to Ibiza and basing ourselves there every Summer for the last 5 years. It’s an amazing island and it has been so good to us in so many ways. It’s such an energizing and inspirational place both musically and just generally really. We always hang out at the Fish Shack, a super low-key spot that does the best seafood you have ever tasted in your life. Washed down with a cliff jump and a Hierbas afterwards keeps us smiling in between gigs.”
“Telepopmusik – Breathe
Mathew Herbert – The Audience
Postal Service – Such Great Heights
Propellerheads – History Repeating
Kruder and Dorfmeister – Bug Powder Dust
John Coltrane – My Favourite Things
Bonobo – Light Pattern
Metronomy- The Bay
Jamiroquai – Blow Your Mind
Frou Frou – Let Go
“Everytime we walk into a Hotel Lobby that’s playing Kenny G.”
“They love it. Our parents are our biggest fans and support us in everything we do. We’re really lucky to have that kind of support from our folks. Makes a huge difference.”
Luciano’s Depeche Mode Remix of ‘Enjoy the Silence’ he’s been dropping all summer in Ibiza…also a new Goldfish Track we’re working on that we’ve been testing at gigs…goes off!”
“We’re back in the studio at the moment working on a new single for release next year, as well as some remixes and working on our new album. It’s an exciting time.”
