Gosteffects

Getting total re-specter on the floors of Manhattan

Gosteffects, welcome to DMC. You are creating havoc in the States with a new single ‘Slave To The Sweat’ hitting us on February 14th. So tell us about the early years, who first got you into electronic music and what tunes/bands were you into back then?

“I first figured out I wanted to be a musician when my family went to a trip to Italy.  Before we left I bought the downward spiral by Nine Inch Nails.  It changed my life.  I was raised in a Catholic family.  We spent three weeks traveling around the country looking at religious works of art.  I suppose the combo of those two elements I was exposed to on that trip is making an appearance in what I’m doing now artistically.”

What were the early clubs you were jumping around in and what DJs were you following?

“Where I grew up there weren’t any clubs.  I grew up throwing underground illegal events.  I had to pave my own way.  I remember a few getting shut down when I was underage.  One time the cops came in and were going to arrest me for having minors out at this place past curfew, then they checked my ID and saw I was only 17.  They couldn’t really do anything to me since I was a minor myself.  They just told me to leave.”

So new tune, talk us through it…

“I guess you could call “Slave to the Sweat” a tech house track with electro and dutch influence.  I am a futurist so I spend a good portion of my day thinking about life after the singularity.  I like to imagine the robotic voices as artificial life two hundred years from now.”

What is the current Top 10 you are spinning?

Agoria – Speechless feat Carl Craig (Gesaffelstein Remix)
Lucky Date – Six 16
Peo de Pitte – Grey Tape
KroyClub – Burned Out Cynder
Knife Party – Destroy Them With Lazers
Dada Life – Kick Out the Epic Motherfucker
Die Antwoord – I Fink U Freeky
Gosteffects – House of God
Gosteffects – Kick the Bass
Gosteffects – Slave to the Sweat (Rule of Eight Remix)

What style of music are you happiest spinning at the moment?

“I kind of go back and forth between electro and techno  I love the energy of the electro side.. but I like to have the journey of techno in a set as well.   Depending on the crowd I’ll drift one way or the other.”

You have some cool remixes tucked under your belt already – your ‘Just For Now’ collab with Blake Bratcher (Rule of Eight) for Imogen Heap was superb. What’s coming next from you in 2012 remix wise?

“I have a couple other remixes with Rule of Eight on the way.  I’m sure you will be hearing a lot more about him soon.  I’m also working on a remix for Blatta & Inesha right now.”

A big show coming up in March at Snowball in Colorado where you’ll be spinning to 7000 people with the likes of Snoop Dog. Is this the biggest show to date, you looking forward to it?

“Yeah, I have never played an outdoor event in the snow.  I don’t really know what to expect.  I’m sure I’ll come back with some stories… hopefully one involving a hot tub.”

Who would you say are your musical influences?

“Currently I’ve been listening to a lot of electronic music that isn’t music made for DJ sets.  I like the idea behind the witch house movement.  I like a lot of future bass.  I feel like a lot of the cooler things coming out in electronic music right now isn’t club music.  My job for 2012 is going to be taking these elements I’m hearing and translating them into DJ culture.”

Some strange quotes surrounding you over in the US. For instance, Gosteffects “who used to play on hacked Gameboys…”. Explain please…!

“I think that was probably something about Rule of Eight.  I’m not sure where that came from.  I’ve also seen three Gosteffects blog posts so far that have a picture of my friend, Black Matter.  I don’t think people know what to think yet.  I kinda like it that way.”

So we come back to yours after the club, what is the Gosteffects Back To Mine Top 10 you spin us to chill…

Charli XCX – Nuclear Seasons
Voltaire Twins – Animalia
Slow Head – A Hundred Boys
Sully – Trust
Charli XCX – Stay Away (Salem’s Angel Remix)
Holy Other – Touch
Holy Other – Yr Love
Morris – Affairs
Little Jinder – Keep on Dreaming
Sinjin Hawke & Morris – One Kiss

You seem to be DJing all over the place at the moment, what has been the best club night you’ve DJ’d at recently?

“Girls & Boys at Webster Hall in New York.  That’s one of my favorite places I’ve played.  I live in Manhattan so that’s my Friday night hang with my NY crew.  It is always slammed and people there go bananas.  Webster Hall is a great venue.  You can feel the history lurking around inside the place.  If the walls there could  talk I’m sure  there would be some pretty entertaining stories.”

What big shows are you looking forward to in 2012?

“I’m really looking forward the tour after the EP comes out around April-June.  There’s a few things lining up that I can’t say yet.”

And finally, what is coming next from the studio…

“Computer Club (aka Gigantor from Evol Intent) and I just finished an original called “Party Tonight.”   I’m collaborating with vocalist Sisley Treasure (formally of Shiny Toy Guns).  After the EP I’ll have my track with Lucky Date and Kristina Sedito coming out, “You Are Mine.”  The EP is all solely Gosteffects originals, but I’ve been enjoying collaborating lately for new material.”
