25th January – Roots Manuva gives us food for thought.
A low slung funky groove with sassy swing and handclaps, drives RM’s swaggering bittersweet vocal about the shallow and plastic lifestyle of the fizz & nose up fuelled super club / arena DJ. It hits the spot.
2 (8) DIDZ & CHICO – WHEN I SAY FT. VANITY – MELODICA
A lovely slice of fresh sounding future thinking urban, which cherry picks and puts a new slant on all the best bits. Tony Blitz delivers a bumping house mix, and the man at the Melodica helm Chris Coco takes us on a fuzzy round the edges dub excursion.
3 (6) THIS MANY BOYFRIENDS – TINA WEYMOUTH – ANGULAR
The third single to be lifted from their much lauded self titled debut LP. As you would expect, it’s charming, got great witty lyrics, and it’s jangly with a pigeon toed stance. Indie pop doesn’t get much better than this.
4 (4) THE DEADSTOCK 33S – UNDERNEATH THE PINES – GOMMA
The teaser single for the debut LP has got an early 90’s feel, with a blue eyed vocal over classic Balearic flavours. Ewan Pearson delivers a funky low slung seductive mix that simply oozes quality, and Disco Bloodbath go for a handclap fuelled electro number.
5 (1) MERCURY – MAN EP – GOMMA
Peak time irresistible house business, sporting brilliant effected percussion and a bassline to die for, complete with a slightly camp repetitive vocal: I’m a man, that’s all I am, my muscles are of steel, my mind a complex computer. Superb. http://youtu.be/qvKJY92D-n4
6 (7) INDIANS – SOMEWHERE ELSE – 4AD
Indians is the brainchild of Soren Lokke Juul from Copenhagen, a very determined and creative individual, who has managed to capture that Scandinavian film noir cool, and mixed it with just the right amount of colourful American influenced psychedelics, creating a wide eyed winter wonderland with a difference. Imagine Mercury Rev and MGMT taking a trip across glacial fuelled fjords under twinkling night skies. http://youtu.be/338hl_lOuOE http://youtu.be/XbB_sE3knvI
